    Senior Full Stack Engineer

    This is the most technically expansive engineering role at the company. You will own the full web stack — from the PostgreSQL schema and PostGIS geospatial queries that power our 28-parameter property dataset, through the Node.js/Next.js API layer that serves scored data, to the React components that homeowners and financial professionals interact with every day. You will work directly with the Lead Product Visionary and our data science team. Prototyping pace is high. You will move from concept to shipped feature fast, and you will make architectural decisions without always having complete information. This is the role that defines how Lightspark's platform is built.

    About Our Platform

    We are a cleantech data company building the definitive intelligence layer for residential property risk and sustainability. Our platform scores 5 million+ homes across five climate dimensions — energy, carbon, fire, flood, and wind — drawing on 28+ property parameters: parcel and lot geometry, building envelope, windows, doors, insulation, heating and cooling systems, and solar potential. Our two web products are Engage, a consumer application that helps homeowners understand and act on their home's climate profile, and HomeIQ, a property intelligence platform serving lenders, insurers, and real estate professionals with deep analytics and risk scoring. Both are web-first. Both need to be fast, beautiful, and reliable.

    The Stack

    • Web app: Next.js 14 + TypeScript + React (Vite for isolated components)
    • Styling: Tailwind CSS (CSS Modules for complex components)
    • Data viz: D3.js / Recharts (Mapbox GL / deck.gl for geospatial)
    • API layer: Next.js API routes / Node.js (FastAPI for scoring engine)
    • Database: PostgreSQL + PostGIS (Redis for caching)
    • Auth: NextAuth.js / Auth0 (JWT, OAuth2)
    • Infra: AWS (ECS, RDS, S3, CloudFront), Docker, GitHub Actions CI/CD
    • Data science: Python (read/integrate only) — pandas, numpy, scikit-learn context

    Frontend — Engage Consumer Web App

    • Architect and build the Engage web application in Next.js and TypeScript — the primary interface through which homeowners understand their energy, carbon, fire, flood, and wind profile
    • Design and implement interactive data visualisations: score cards, risk gauges, trend charts, and geospatial map layers that make complex climate data immediately legible to a non-technical homeowner
    • Build a responsive, mobile-first, accessible UI — this is a consumer product held to consumer product standards
    • Implement performant client-side state management across a multi-parameter, data-dense application
    • Optimise for Core Web Vitals — LCP, CLS, FID — because page speed is a product feature when homeowners are searching their address

    Frontend — HomeIQ Professional Platform

    • Build the HomeIQ analytics interface for lenders, insurers, and real estate professionals — a data-dense, multi-tenant dashboard with property search, risk scoring tables, portfolio views, and exportable reports
    • Implement role-based access control across the UI — enterprise clients have different data access tiers
    • Build interactive geospatial layers (Mapbox GL or deck.gl) overlaying fire, flood, and wind risk on property maps
    • Design reusable chart and table components in D3.js or Recharts that work across both Engage and HomeIQ

    API & Backend

    • Build and own the Next.js API routes and/or Node.js services that sit between the database and the frontend — serving property scores, parameter data, and user account information
    • Design clean, versioned REST endpoints consumed by both web applications, and eventually by third-party API customers (lenders, insurers)
    • Integrate with the Python/FastAPI scoring engine — calling model endpoints, handling responses, caching results, and surfacing errors gracefully in the UI
    • Implement authentication and authorisation flows: consumer sign-up/login for Engage, enterprise SSO and multi-tenant access for HomeIQ
    • Build background job processing for score refresh cycles and data pipeline triggers

    Database & Geospatial

    • Own the PostgreSQL schema for property data — 28+ parameters per property, 5M+ records, with PostGIS geometry for parcel boundaries, lot shapes, and spatial risk zones
    • Write performant geospatial queries: point-in-polygon for parcel lookup, buffer analysis for risk proximity, spatial joins across fire, flood, and wind hazard layers
    • Design and maintain database indexes, query plans, and caching strategies (Redis) for a high-read, analytics-heavy workload
    • Build ETL pipelines that ingest raw property data from multiple sources — land title registries, municipal datasets, satellite data — and normalise it into the scoring schema

    Infrastructure & DevOps

    • Manage cloud infrastructure on AWS: ECS for containerised services, RDS for PostgreSQL, S3 and CloudFront for static assets, Lambda for event-driven processing
    • Maintain Docker configurations and GitHub Actions CI/CD pipelines — automated testing, staging deployments, and production releases
    • Implement monitoring, alerting, and logging (CloudWatch, Sentry, or similar) across both web products
    • Manage environment configuration, secrets handling, and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform or CDK)

    Data Science Integration

    • Work closely with data scientists to integrate Python-based energy, carbon, and climate risk models into production web services
    • You do not build the models — but you must understand them well enough to implement them correctly, validate their outputs, and surface model uncertainty in the UI
    • Read Python notebooks and FastAPI service code; raise implementation concerns before they become production bugs
    • Build tooling to validate that production scores match expected model outputs within defined tolerances

    Technical — Non-Negotiable

    • TypeScript: strong, production-grade — your primary language across frontend and backend
    • React: deep understanding of component architecture, hooks, rendering performance, and state management patterns
    • Next.js: App Router, server components, API routes, SSR/SSG trade-offs, image optimisation
    • Node.js: async patterns, event loop, stream processing, REST API design
    • PostgreSQL: schema design, query optimisation, indexing, transactions — not just ORM usage
    • PostGIS: geospatial queries, spatial indexing, coordinate systems — or strong GIS background and willingness to go deep fast
    • Git, Docker, CI/CD: you run your own deployments and debug your own infrastructure
    • Python (reading level): enough to read data science code, call FastAPI endpoints, and understand what the scoring models are doing

    Technical — Strong Assets

    • D3.js or Recharts for custom data visualisation
    • Mapbox GL JS or deck.gl for geospatial map rendering
    • AWS services: ECS, RDS, S3, CloudFront, Lambda
    • Redis for caching and session management
    • Auth0, NextAuth.js, or equivalent authentication platforms
    • Terraform or AWS CDK for infrastructure-as-code
    • Building physics fundamentals — heat transfer, thermal envelope, HVAC — enough to have an intelligent conversation with a data scientist about what an energy score means
    • Experience in climate tech, PropTech, insurtech, or energy transition software

    Professional

    • 6+ years of professional software engineering, with consumer-facing web products in your portfolio that you are proud to show
    • Demonstrable experience owning a full stack — not just frontend or backend, but both, in production
    • You make architectural decisions, document them, and own the consequences
    • You communicate technical constraints clearly to a non-technical product visionary without being condescending or evasive
    • You are comfortable being the most senior technical voice in a room and comfortable being wrong
    • Startup cadence: you ship fast, you refactor deliberately, and you do not wait for a perfect spec
